Coating Junior Scientist

Reports To: Process development

Conducts development work on mixing, coating processes and cathode formulation for lithium sulfur batteries. Takes responsibility for daily operation of the R&D/prototype cathode production coater/lab, schedules experiments, operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Person must have the ability to work independently to carry out project assignments in process development for lithium sulfur batteries. Assists in planning and conducts cathode process development, performs experiments, tests, proves, or modify hypotheses on the basis of personal findings and/or experiences of others research in related technological areas. Must have ability to Work closely and effectively with R & D and manufacturing engineering at Sion Power in designing, carrying out and reporting on these experiments. Must be able to evaluate findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment, or processes, or to develop applications of findings to new uses. Consults with suppliers and provides recommendations to achieve company goals. Occasional travel for short periods may be necessary. Reviews and analyzes experimental data, compiles databases and draws conclusions and recommendations. Person will be required to prepare technical reports for use by R & D or management personnel for long and short-range planning, or for use by technical services for their activities. Must coordinate with R & D engineers, manufacturing engineering personnel and technical service personnel for development and scale-up of coating processes and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related discipline is required. Two (2) to five (5) years work experience in R&D in the field of slurry coating. Experience in production environment welcomed

-Should be computer literate and have good verbal and written communication skills
-Able to program excel macro and comfortable with visual basic
-Mechanical practical aptitude (very hands-on)
-Understand process control.
-Ideal candidate should have a technical background in coating or slurry based process such as paint, ink, explosive or cathode thin film material.
-Candidate should be familiar with mixing and formulation operation.
-The candidate should be able to organize, maintain and run coating equipment
-The candidate should have basic skills in carrying out and interpreting chemical analysis and characterizations of materials and coatings.
-They should also have the ability to carry out independent data analysis. The candidate needs to be able to make observations, reason and draw scientific conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
-General knowledge of formulation, basic chemistry and characterization such as solid content, particle size distribution, maximum packing factor, theology is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the individual needs to be physically fit to work in the office and in a chemical laboratory, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds to chest level. The candidate will need to carry out work, and handle various chemical materials, in a chemical lab (open air and fume hood) with personal protection equipment (PPE, such as goggles, masks, etc.). Much of the lab work will require that the individual work in a dry room on a regular basis for prolonged durations (up to several hours at a time) more than half of the time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the individual will work in an office as well as in chemical, vacuum and dry room laboratories. The candidate will: work with PC's and other office equipment; perform basic bench chemical work in open air and in a fume hoods (sometimes with PPE); spend times (up to several hours at a time) preparing samples in a dry room; operate and maintain R&D vacuum coating systems located in a dry room (again, sometimes for several hours at a time); and, occasionally, work in the machine shop on minor construction projects.
